Every Christmas, the ship packs up and sails north to Tenerife where we do maintenance and pass our marine inspections. It gives the crew a break and we get ready for the next outreach, which will start in February of 2010 in Lome, Togo. Next year's outreach isn't the usual 10-month one, though; we'll just be in Togo until the end of August, I think, and then we'll sail to South Africa to replace the generators, which are really on their way out at this point.

i'm de-lurking to let you know how much i love your blog in general and this post specifically. what an amazing adventure you're on! it often brings tears of joy to my eyes to read your stories.

I'm sure it was a tremendous relief to discover that that baby was fine - it is so hard to tell people "no".
