First of all, Happy Birthday! It's so encouraging for me to read your blog, and remind myself that it is okay that we don't have a house yet. And that we aren't rich. You are a really, really beautiful person, inside and out, and I really wish I could have lunch with you or something. You make me strive to be better.

Also, that is a rockin' scrub top. I'm jealous!

Happy Birthday Al. Loving your stories and missing your face. I still love you, by the way.

a life that is by all accounts, something of a failure - only to those who do not recognize success!!!
Here is a measure of success -
A truth that tells me that life marked by the rhythm of drums and sunsets behind palm trees is a good life. That having is not as important as giving. That beauty is our inheritance, no matter how we look. That if we can learn to love, deeply and without reservation, everything else will fall into place.
Enjoy your success, enjoy your special day (though by now in West Africa it is likely tomorrow!), and enjoy the year that lies ahead.
God bless you and Phil.

Happy birthday!
Your life has riches that neither moths nor rust can get to!
May your next year be filled with even more love - pressed down, shaken together, running over!

I would disagree on your perceived level of your wisdom! You are living out what many of us only claim to believe and are showing us all how fulfilling it truly is. Spending oneself for others is exactly what Jesus said would give us Life - and it appears you have it in abundance! Happy Birthday!
Thank you for sharing your journey, and in doing, spurring us all on!

I'm curious - could you write a post about how one goes about being on Mercy ship, living there? Do you pay to be there? How are one's living expenses taken care of? I'm very curious :-) Thank you!

I don't comment often, but since its your birthday - Happy Birthday!
I'm very blessed by all you share and write.
I'll probably never be on a boat doing mercy ministries and probably never be in Africa, but I read your blog because I experience it when I read your blog. And i gain wisdom that I would have never gained. I hope your birthday is full of many more blessings and good surprises!

Matthew 6:19-21 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Happy Birthday to you!!!! From what I read Ali you are actually extremely wealthy. And the best part of that is you are willing to share with us and help make us better people. Thank you for that. May God continue to bless you each and every day. :-)

Happy Birthday! Thanks for your example of living a life of love - it's a tremendous blessing and encouragement to some of us.
